Step 3

Revise the curriculum and try it out with a pilot group.

Now you are ready to actually rewrite materials, develop new scenarios, and/or plan additional activities. If you have an experienced curriculum developer or trainer on your staff who can lead this process, you’re set! If not and if revisions are extensive, you may need to identify an external consultant to complete the revisions.

Once the revisions are complete, we suggest you try out all or part of the curriculum with a pilot group of youth. Only through actual implementation can you figure out what works and what doesn’t work. Be systematic in observing and documenting the implementation of the course, and pay attention to both the facilitators and the participants. If the course is too difficult to facilitate, is additional facilitator training needed? Or are the directions too difficult or not complete enough? If participants are not actively engaged or not responsive to the materials, are the materials and/or activities too difficult? Not relevant?
